I read the book A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park. The book is about a homeless, Korean orphan named Tree-ear.
Tree-ear eats junk, fish, plants and rice when accessible. He lives with an old man named Crane-man in a vegetable pit. He watches a potter named Min, as often as he can.
Tree-ear becomes apprenticed to Min. He takes two pots to the capitol city, Song-do. As a result, Min is given a royal commission to make pottery for the emperor. Tree-ear gets adopted by Min and his wife.
I thought this was a good book. I think you will too. It's sad near the end so you might want a handkerchief.
