One of the items on our summer bucket list for Elise was to use sidewalk chalk. Today, she and her friend, C, made some homemade sidewalk chalk following directions given at www.modernmom.com. The girls also managed to cross "water balloon themed sleep over off the list as they had water fights this morning!
First they prepped toilet paper tubes by covering the bottom with duck tape and inserting a wax paper liner.
Then they mixed up plaster of paris mixing 1/2 cup plaster to 1/4 cup water and adding tempera paint to mix to the desired color.

They spooned the mixture into the tubes. Since the girls wanted different layers to their chalk they added one color then waited a little while to add the next. They swirled the layers together to try and marble it a little using a chopstick.
The girls got just a little messy.
The finished project is currently sitting on a cookie tray hardening. It should be ready to use tomorrow.
